Train the animals
Follow the guide to help the animals understand the system.
The animals must be trained before they can use the system.
The animals must be trained to understand the signals from the collar. This is done by frequently exposing them to the signals over a short period of time. The goal is for the animals to react to the sound signals alone and avoid the use of electric signals.
For safety reasons, we recommend that training takes place within a physically fenced area where parts of the area are restricted by the virtual fence. This way, it is easy to monitor and control the animals while they are frequently exposed to the fence and can quickly understand how it works.
During training, it is important to ensure that the animals are comfortable and not distressed by the solution. Most grazing animals learn virtual fences quickly and only need a few encounters with the fence over a few days to understand the system.
For animals that have trouble learning, we recommend removing them from the herd to avoid confusing the other animals. Later, you can try again as the animals may learn from the rest of the trained herd.
At the beginning of the training, the signals from the collar will stop as soon as the animals move in the desired direction - away from the fence. Once the animals have responded correctly several times, the system switches to a normal mode where the sound plays until the animals are back within the virtually fenced area.
When the animals primarily respond to the sound signals, they will be considered trained. You can monitor the signals given to each individual animal in the app.
Practical Tips for Training
- After the animals are released from the barn for the season, they should have at least 24 hours to "run off" their energy before beginning training on the system.
- A suitable area for training the animals should:
- Be surrounded by a physical fence
- Have good mobile coverage
- Have ample access to feed and water for at least 10 days
- Be small enough that the animals have many and frequent interactions with the fence
- The virtual fence should be of a simple rectangular shape
- The virtual fence should not be changed during the training period
- Monitor the signals given to the animals in the app to see the status of the traning.
Animals that have used similar systems before
We have observed that animals that have previously used other similar systems quickly understand the signals from Monil's collar.
