Virtual Fencing in Northern Ireland Transforms Grazing Practices
Discover how Monil’s virtual fencing transforms strip and hill grazing with real-world results from Northern Ireland's rugged terrain.
Two pilot customers tested Monil’s virtual fencing system during the last grazing season in Northern Ireland’s rugged terrain. Jack Dobson, co-founder of Dunbia, a leading European food company, trialed the system for strip grazing on his farm. Foyle Farms of Excellence tried Monil for hill grazing in challenging terrain. Foyle Farms of Excellence conducts research and trials on the farm, working with new technologies to find practical and sustainable options for producers. These two trials demonstrate that the system adapts well to various terrains and grazing methods.
Jack has seen fantastic results—2700 sounds per day with almost no shocks. This demonstrates the system's ability to train the cattle effectively while keeping them comfortable. Foyle’s experience with hill grazing has also been positive, with more even grazing across rough areas.
Live Virtual Fence Demo for Strip and Hill Grazing
Recently, Jack Dobson’s farm hosted our Monil demonstration, showing virtual fence technology in real-world conditions.
Twenty-five attendees joined to learn about the Monil system and its use in strip and hill grazing. In the field, participants watched a live demonstration, where the cows smoothly adjusted to the movement of the virtual fence.
Afterward, we shared a meal, followed by a short presentation from Foyle Farms, who highlighted their experiences using the system. We also got some great insights from the Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute (AFBI) on their research on virtual fencing. The day concluded with more discussions and insightful questions from the group.
It was a truly rewarding day, and the interest from the attendees was humbling. We’d like to thank Jack Dobson and Foyle Farms for being our pilot customers and all 25 participants who came to the presentation and gave us positive feedback.
We’re also excited that Farmers Journal has written a piece about our virtual fencing event.
